Only Peter Chapman can do this.
  He cuts a single
piece of domestic or exotic wood into a 3-dimensional fascinating interlocking puzzle. His puzzles thus articulate and
move like the beings they represent.
“What I make is really a kind of
kinetic sculpture,” Peter says softly, his native Virginia reflected in his
words. “I probably sell as many of them for adult toys as I do for kids’ toys.”
A native of Southwest Virginia, Peter studied architecture at Virginia
Tech in Blacksburg, Va. In 1975,
Peter returned to the Blue Ridge Mountains to establish his own wood-working
studio. There on Bent Mountain, in a barn surrounded by apple orchards, he
creates his own unique style of furniture and sculpture, including his popular
three-dimensional puzzle animals. Peter is a member of the Southern Highlands
Handcrafts Guild, Virginia Mountain Crafts Guild, and The International Wood
Collectors Society.

Whether a conversation
piece or something to be solved, a puzzle brings people together. What a wonderful addition to your home or office and terrific gifts for
all ages. This puzzle, however, is not intended for small children, given the
small pieces and delicate joints.
The painstaking
craftsmanship, combined with the beauty of the native and exotic woods Peter
uses, results in a beautiful piece of art suitable for display on your coffee
table.
Each individually handcrafted wooden puzzle is individually cut, unique to the specific piece of
wood chosen, and signed & dated by Peter Chapman himself.

Each puzzle is
made from a single piece of native or exotic hardwood. So, how
would one begin to disassemble the thing?
Once the eye pin is removed, the interlocking pieces may be
removed sequentially.
Aha, the eye! Your fingers push the
dowel out of the wooden head. Suddenly, the first piece is
freed. The next slides out at an angle. And the next. And the
next. So much fun. About midway in the disassembly, a tiny
piece flips out from within the larger one. Surprise! A tiny
surprise hides inside.
Putting it back together is easy as the pieces can only
go one way. In a minute or so the task is complete. Reinserting
the eye locks the pieces together and secures the sculpture.
The result is an animal that
articulates and moves like the being it represents. |
